Since 2020, the University’s Commission for Sustainable Development (CoSA) has been created to work on several key areas for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our actions
Energy
Reducing energy dependence on fossil fuels and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

Mobility
Improving sustainable mobility. Activities in this area are coordinated by the Mobility Manager.
Social justice and gender equality
Promoting social justice and gender equality in cooperation with other governing bodies and functions of the University.
Waste
Managing waste sustainably, reusing materials and implementing up-cycling. The nearly Zero Waste (n0w) project is active in this field, while activities related to the management of special waste are coordinated by the Waste and Resource Manager.
Green spaces and biodiversity
Enhancing and maintaining the University’s arboreal heritage and protecting biodiversity.
Education and culture
Raising awareness of sustainability issues among students and staff through training initiatives, events and communication campaigns.
Water
Countering the use of plastic water bottles and improving public water supply.
Food and health
Raising awareness of the importance of healthy and sustainable eating within the University and promoting healthy living habits.
Fundraising
Raising funds through participation in competitive calls for proposals, or other activities and initiatives aimed at obtaining funding to enhance sustainability.
Accountability
Socio-environmental reporting of the University and participation in international sustainability rankings.

The commission
The University’s Commission for Sustainable Development (CoSA), created in 2020, promotes the culture of environmental and social sustainability in the academic community of Pisa.
Its main objective is to make proposals to the decision-making bodies of the University for the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, through concrete strategies and actions.
The Commission also plays an advisory role in the University’s action programmes and participates in discussion and governance forums on territorial policies for sustainability.
The Commission is appointed every two years by the Rector and is composed of more than 20 members (lecturers, students, technical-administrative staff), coordinated by the Pro-rector for Sustainability and 2030 Agenda of the University of Pisa, who chairs it.
